We went out to Felley Priory this week and found we were a few weeks too late for the flowers to be looking their best. Moy, however, took some wonderful low key pics and I am determined better to understand how to take this type of image. Moy learned the basics from fellow Ockbrook Photo Club Mick Govan and added her own magic touch.
I am very pleased with my first attempt but have a lot to learn before I match Moy's quality. This is it!
Typically I thought I would have a go to see if I could imitate the Low Key effect in Photoshop using layer masks and am quite pleased with the effects. They are not truly Low Key but I like them. Here they are.
I really must work hard to produce this very dramatic style in camera. A new project??
I like the above photographs very much, this genre of photography also appeals to me. As you will be aware this style of photography can be undertaken indoors or outdoors, using natural light, torchlight or flash and then perfecting if need be in post process as you have mentioned Chris. Light as you well know is a fundamental requirement in photography, more so for low key, the skill is how to use it in order to create the effect we look for. The direction, strength and colour of the light in my opinion differs greatly from general use of flash or natural light. I think the skill in low key photography lies more in exposure rather than composition and clarity, that's not to say composition and clarity should not be sought. It would be nice to meet up sometime and and practice this genre together.
ReplyDeleteMoy is further down the learning curve than I am on this. She states that the choice of background for the subject is very important. If you isolate your subject against a bright white background it will be almost impossible to render that background black.
DeleteI have to say that Moy is not necessarily correct, low key can be produced by using high speed sync flash. This can be demonstrated on November 16 at the Waterfall.
ReplyDeleteIn her defence I paraphrased what she said rather than quoted her so it is my mistake. Neither of us have access to triggers that let us use high speed sync so cannot experiment with this method of producing hi-key images. Look forward to giving it a try sometime.
